Happy Summer!

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for a fantastic year. It has been a great school year, which is largely in part to the role that parents and caregivers play at home. I am very grateful to have had such a wonderful group of students, as well as their parents who support them at home this year.
Thank you very much for the thoughtful gift from Cabela's. I am looking forward to picking out some new camping and fishing gear for the summer.
Have a safe and happy summer, and don't hesitate to drop by to say hello if you are in the school next fall!
Mme Katherine Ollerhead

I also wanted to share the link to another blog I will be keeping over the summer of my summer reading. Most of the books have been recommended by this year's students: www.mmessummerreading2013.blogspot.com

Pike Lake

We had an awesome day at Pike Lake! We left school first thing to drive out on the bus. When we got there we mini-golfed in teams of 4. Three students won a free round of golf! We went for a nature hike. We saw lots of caterpillars, some tadpoles, and even a snake! We had a delicious hot dog, watermelon and rice krispie square lunch, then we played on the playground before we went pond dipping. We caught a predaceous water beetle, some leeches, some minnows, a bunch of snails, and some freshwater shrimp.
Thank you to all the parents who came along and sent rice krispie treats!

Upcoming class trips

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out on our upcoming class trips. I have enough parents for Pike Lake, but I am still looking for 1 or 2 others for both the library and the Kinsmen Park outings.
I am also looking for a few other volunteers who can send a 9x13 tray of RiceKrispie treats for the Pike Lake trip.

Also, for the class trip to the library, I have forms available for students who do not have a library card and wish to get one. If you would like a copy, you can either visit : http://www.saskatoonlibrary.ca/sites/default/files/File/UsingTheLibrary/AllAboutBorrowing/LSCBorrowerRegistration04_13.pdf and print a copy and send it to the school, or email or write a note saying you would like a copy sent home. If you send them back to school I will fax them in so students will have a card ready and waiting when we get there. If your child already has a library card, please send it with him or her to school on that day.

MIMI #5

This week we have been talking lots about the ocean, sea life and marine animals as an introduction to our last MIMI poster. Yesterday I brought a couple of artifacts for the students to look at and touch. I brought un oursin (a sea urchin), and un os de baleine (a whale bone).
Here they are:
L'oursin is about 6cm in diameter.

Now that we have read some books about the sea and ocean, today we will look at our poster and label it, giving us a new set of words to study.

Life cycles

We have been looking at various animals and how their life cycles are the same and different. We learned about animals that change dramatically through their life (caterpillar to butterfly), and we learned about animals that are ovipare (oviparous - hatched from eggs), and animals that are vivipare (vivparous - live birth). Yesterday we each got an animal and went on the computers to research its life cycle. We had to find the answers to two questions: Is it ovipare or vivipare? and Does it undergo la metamorphose or non?
When we came back to class we sorted our animals into the 4 groups. Here is our work:

StarLab

Yesterday morning we got to visit StarLab, which was very cool. We learned about some of the stars in the sky, as well as some of the stories that go with some of the constellations. What a great opportunity!

We had a great day at the farm yesterday. We saw cows, chickens, sheep and pigs.
