Les poussins!

This week, Mme Hada's Grade 1 class is hatching eggs! They have un incubateur and une couveuse (brooder) set up in their classroom. Each day this week we will go and visit and hopefully get to see an egg hatch! Here are some pictures of what we saw yesterday, on Jour #1:
12 oeufs dans l'incubateur

Les semis (seedlings)

We have been continuing to take care of and observe our plants. When we came in on Monday, almost every pot had at least one semi! We have been enjoying sketching changes we see each day, and using our rulers to measure how many centimetres our plants have grown. Here are some photos:

The Lorax

Today we read the book The Lorax and had some discussion around it. Students each made a mustache that went home with them. We also wrote about what we would do if we were entrusted with the last seed of the Truffula tree. Here is a link to the original The Lorax cartoon (1972).

Les plantes

Last week we made some flower pots and planted some seeds. We will be keeping track each day of our seeds' growth, like scientists! Here are the photo directions for if you want to do some planting at home:
What you need: 1/2 sheet of newspaper, masking tape and a pop can.

Fold the 1/2 sheet of newspaper into thirds the long way.

Roll the newspaper around the popcan tightly. Leave a bit of paper hanging out the end.

Fold the paper around the bottom in.

Ask a friend to tape the bottom for you while you hold it.

Tape the seam on the side.

Remove the popcan et VOILA, a biodegradable flower pot!
Here are our pots with plants. We planted marigolds (les soucis), beans (les haricots) and tomatoes (les tomates).

L'argent

For the past week or so, we have been learning about money. We have learned the values of the different coins and bills, and have been working on adding money and making sums of money using different coins. Working with money helps us to count by 1s, 5s, 10s and even 25s. It also helps build critical thinking skills, and is a valuable life skill to have. Today we played two little games on the SMARTBoard, and I promised students I would share the links so they could play at home.

Today we discussed the two differences between French and English in writing amounts of money. In English we use a "." to separate dollar from cents, where as in French, we use a ",". Also, in English, the $ goes before the amount of money, and in French, it comes after. For example, in English we would write  $5.32, but in French, we write 5,32$.

StarPhoenix Fundraiser

Last week, order forms and information sheets went home for the StarPhoenix fundraiser. For each subscription sold, EVS will get $20. For each subscription that a student sells, he or she will get an entry into a draw for a prize. This fundraiser will finish up in about a months time. Thanks for all of your support at home!

Puddles

It's that time of year again...
All of the snow is finally beginning to melt and the result is a wet school yard with lots of tempting puddles. Again this year we are asking that students stay out of the puddles during recess and lunch times. I have been reminding them to be wearing rubber boots and proper clothes outside to keep themselves warm and dry. I have also told all of the students that if they make the decision to play in or near the puddles that they may get wet, and that they will be cold an uncomfortable for the remainder of the day.  All that being said, I understand that sometimes accidents happen, so students are welcome to keep a dry change of clothes in their locker.
