Water Rafiki Friend Chains

There was a piece in the newsletter about Water Rafiki Friend Chains yesterday, and coming home today is an order form. We had a visit from an SLC member who explained about the chains this morning. Each chain purchased provides water for one person for an entire year! They are made by hand in Kenya by women who receive fair wages. Here is a little video about the water rafiki chains:
Orders are due in by Thursday, January 31st. Cheques can be made payable to the school.

Les liquides

Corn syrup, water and oil don't mix.

Lava lamps!

Lava lamp
Today we were looking at liquids. We described 3 different liquids and then watched what happened when we mixed them together. We learned that some liquids are heavier than others. We learned a new word to describe liquids - visqueux (viscous). At the end of our experiment we added some food colouring to the mix to see what would happen. The effect was something like a lava lamp. We learned that some liquids don't always mix together, but some do.

Les liquides et les solides homework

Written in the agenda as homework for today was Les liquides et les solides. I didn't get a chance to go over the expectations for this with students at the end of the day, so it will be coming home tomorrow. I am asking that it be back by next Wednesday, January 23rd.
Students will have to find 2 liquids at home and describe them, decide which is the most viscous, as well as mix them together to see what happens.
Merci!

Science Fair

This year, EVS will be having a science fair. For my students, completing a project will be completely optional. We discussed today about what a science fair is and looked at some science websites during our computer time to get some ideas of what kind of science we may be interested in doing a project about.
The science fair will be on March 20th. Projects will be on display in the afternoon and again in the evening from 5:30-7pm. My students are free to do a project on their own, or with one or two partners. There are some websites to help with choosing topics and questions on the LibGuides page (http://elementarylibguides.spsd.sk.ca/content.php?pid=290416&sid=3304031). Stay tuned for more information on this blog and in the school newsletters.
This is a great opportunity for students to learn about an area of science that interests them.  If you have any questions or want help getting started, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thank you, as always, for your support at home.

Math Club

Starting tomorrow, Math Club will now be on Tuesdays from 12:10-12:45. Skipping club will be starting shortly on Thursdays at lunch and we didn't want students to have to choose between the two.

Kindness - La gentillesse

Our next trait for character education will be Kindness, or la gentillesse.

We looked at the website www.randomactsofkindness.org where there are many ideas for random acts of kindness and then we each wrote a page of a class book of ideas for Random Acts of Kindness (les Bonnes Actions) that we can do to brighten someone's day. Click on the link to see our ideas: http://video.spsd.sk.ca/uploads/OllerheadK20131611917.wmv

le 17-21 decembre

A few notes for this last week before the Christmas Break...

-Library on Monday. Please bring back your books to exchange for new ones for over the break.
-Santa's Workshop is on Wendesday, Dec. 19. If you are able to volunteer, please call the office to let us know. This is a great opportunity for students to get some Christmas shopping done for family members. Items are priced at .25$ - 4$. If you wish to send money prior to Wednesday, please label it with your student's name.
-Home Reading books due back on Friday.
-There will be no dictee on Friday
-Friday afternoon at 1pm we will be having an assembly. Our class will be leading a bilingual version of Vive le vent (Jingle Bells) during the carolling. Following the assembly, our class will have a little Fete de Noel. Feel free to join us for that afternoon.

One final note.. I have already heard from many families who are planning holidays or who will be away for a few days around the break. Please let the office or I know if you know of absences ahead of time. This saves the administrative assistants calling homes of absent students in the mornings. Our last day before the break is Friday, December 21st, and school resumes on Thursday, January 3rd.

If students wish to bring money prior to Dec. 19, please send it labelled in a bag for me to hold on to. If any families have new gift items that they wish to donate, please send them to school or drop them off at the main office. Also, if you were able to donate some time to help students shop and wrap their gifts, please contact the main office. Thank you!

Typing game

During our computer period on Mondays this year, we will be publishing some of our work, which includes typing. Today we started a program that can help us to learn the proper way to type so that we can be efficient and effective typists. The website for this program is:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

If you are practicing with your child, reminding them of proper fingering will help to curb bad typing habits. Thanks, as always, for your support at home.
