Science Fair

What a great success for the first science fair in a long time at Ecole Victoria School! Thank you to all the families who helped students to prepare projects to display for the day. Our class went and checked out the projects, and I think most students were inspired to enter a project next year. What a great opportunity to do some learning in an area of interest!

Story Starters

On Friday during writing time we decided that we would like to write some silly stories for a change. We used the Story Starter from Scholastic (and translated to French, of course). Students very much liked the silly topic, and I said I would share the link for the Story Starter so they could write silly stories at home as well. Happy writing!

Just a few reminders for this upcoming week:
-We are still collecting pennies for the Me to We campaign. If you have any lying around at home, please send them in.
-Science Fair is on Wednesday, March 20th from 1-3:25pm and 5:30-7pm.
-Multicultural Potluck is on Thursday from 6-8pm. Please bring your own cutlery and dish.
-Skipping assembly is at 9:05am on Friday, March 22nd.
-Progress Reports go home on Friday, March 22nd. Three-Way Conferences are on Tuesday, March 26th and Wednesday, March 27th. Please call the office to book a time, or contact me if those times are inconvenient for you.
-Home Reading Books are due back on Friday, March 22nd.

Les formes et les solides geometriques

Today we learned that shapes and 3D objects are related. We learned that the faces of 3D objects are shapes. We made 3D objects from nets on paper to see the connection. I showed the students a website that has printable templates to make characters that are 3D objects. www.cubeecraft.com

We have been learning about shapes (les formes), and have now begun learning about 3D objects (les solides geometriques). On Friday we had some fun building different solides geometriques with marshmallows and spaghetti. We learned that the corners, where the marshmallows are, are called les sommets, edges, where the spaghettis are, are called les aretes, and the flat parts are called les faces.

Me to We Pennies

Each class was given a bag in which to collect pennies. This is part of the Free the Children/Me to We initiative (same as Water Rafiki Friend Chains). The class that collects the most pennies wins an ice cream party. We discussed that the reason we are collecting pennies is to help others, not to win a party (but it would be a cool bonus). So please send any pennies that you may have lying around and help us to help others.

Just a few updates for this upcoming week:
-Library on Monday, bring back your books if you wish to exchange them for new ones.
-Concours d'arts oratoire - Three students (chosen out of a hat), will be presenting their poems for the French classes on Tuesday afternoon in the auditorium.
-We will be having a perimeter lockdown drill on Thursday, March 14th at around 2:15pm
-Home Reading Books due back on Friday.
-Dictee on Friday. This week we will be learning a little bit about le Jour de la St-Patrick. The words are as follows:

Progress Reports and Three-way conferences

Progress reports will be sent home on Friday, March 22nd. Three-way conferences will be held on Tuesday, March 26th from 4-8pm and on Wednesday, March 27th from 4-7pm. Please call the office to schedule a time. As always, if these times are inconvenient for you, please don't hesitate to let me know and we can work to find a time that will. I would love to see each of my students and their parents so they can share their progress with you.

Into March already! Time flies when you are in Grade 2...

Lots of reminders for this week and for this month:
-Library on Monday
-Science Fair forms are due back on Wednesday. They are available at the office if students have not yet filled one in and wish to submit a project. The Science Fair will be on March 20th
-Pretzel forms are due back on Wednesday. This will take the place of a hot lunch for Thursday, March 7th
-School Spirit Day is Water Day on Thursday. Students are asked to wear their Water Rafiki Friend Chains and the colours blue and white
-Scholastic orders are due back on Friday, March 8th. Cheques can be made payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd.
-Home Reading Books are due on Friday, March 8th
-Dictee on Friday, March 8th. This week we are looking at the letters ill, as in the word une fille. The words are as follows:

We have been working on learning about 2D shapes in math for the past few days. Today we were thinking of different ways we could sort shapes (by size, colour, number of corners, etc). As a fun introduction to sorting shapes, we played this fun game on the SmartBoard.

Les microbes

Today we learned a little bit about germs. We talked about feeling sick, how it felt, and different ways we could be sick. We talked about staying home when we aren't feeling well so we don't spread germs. We tried a little experiment with germs. We had some hand sanitizer mixed with glitter, and Mme and two students put some on their hands. We pretended that the sparkles were germs. We then high fived, a student sharpened a pencil, a student put a book away, a student left the classroom. We then looked at where the glitter went - it was everywhere! On everyones hands, on our books, pencil sharpener, the doorknob... We learned about washing our hands and how important it is to do often.

Acceptance

For the next 6 weeks or so, our school will be looking at the character trait of acceptance. February is also Black History Month, so this morning we read The Story of Ruby Bridges. All of the Grade 2s were adamant that what happened to Ruby shouldn't have happened, that regardless of her skin colour she deserved to be treated with respect and be allowed to go to whichever school she wanted. One student summed up simply, "It's on the inside what counts".

Mini Folk Fest

The Home and School Association will be hosting a Mini Folk Fest on Thursday, March 21st. There will be a potluck supper from 6-7pm and entertainment from 7-8pm. We are looking for students who would be interested in performing something related to their culture. If your child is interested, please let me know, or let the main office know. Thanks!

A few updates for this week:

-100th day of school Monday. Feel free to dress up like you are 100 years old.
-On Wednesday morning (before morning recess) we will be going for a little walk to distribute valentines that we made for the community.
-Valentine's Day is Thursday. We will be playing a few Valentine's related games for the afternoon, as well as passing out valentines (if students choose to). A class list was sent home last week.

M. Pascal et son triangle

Lately in math we have been exploring patterns. There are two kinds of patterns, repetitive et croissante (repeating and increasing). Yesterday we were introduced to M. Blaise Pascal, a mathematician and inventor from the 1600's.

He developed a triangle that is full of patterns.

We looked at lots of interesting things in the triangle. We noticed all the ones on the outside, we noticed the lines of counting numbers (1, 2, 3, 4...), we noticed that if you cut the triangle in half it is the same on both sides. We also coloured in all the odd numbers to reveal another pattern (Sierpinski's Triangle) and we tried the hockey stick rule.

There is a copy of Pascal's triangle coming home today that you can use to try to find even more interesting patterns! Bonne chance!

Concours d'art oratoire

This year our class will be participating in the Concours d'art oratoire, an oral speaking competition. Students at the grade 2 level do not compete, but have a chance to show off their oral speaking skills.

 

Our class will be having a celebration (sometime in March) where every student will present their poem. We will then have 3 students (one for each poem) present to the French Immersion students at our school during the Concours assembly. Your child should have a copy of their poem in their sac bleu tonight. Here are the poems (as read by me) that your child can read along and practice with.

-Monday, Feb. 11 will be the 100th day of school. We were discussing as a class something fun to do for that day, and decided that it would be fun if we dressed up like we were 100 years old.
-Valentine's Day is on Thursday, Feb. 14th. I will be sending home a class list of names for students who wish to make valentines. We will be doing some Valentine's activities on Thursday afternoon.

Jour de la Marmotte

This week we have been talking a bit about le Jour de la Marmotte. Today we read a book with some interesting facts about les marmottes. We also did a bit of writing about what we think is going to happen on le Jour de la Marmotte, or something we learned about marmottes, or what we hope will happen on le Jour de la Marmotte.
