Over the past week or so, we have been discussing persuasive writing. As a class we have written a short paragraph in an attempt to persuade another class to read a book we all liked. I thought I would post it for you to enjoy.

Upcoming class trips
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out on our upcoming class trips. I have enough parents for Pike Lake, but I am still looking for 1 or 2 others for both the library and the Kinsmen Park outings.
I am also looking for a few other volunteers who can send a 9x13 tray of RiceKrispie treats for the Pike Lake trip.
Also, for the class trip to the library, I have forms available for students who do not have a library card and wish to get one. If you would like a copy, you can either visit : http://www.saskatoonlibrary.ca/sites/default/files/File/UsingTheLibrary/AllAboutBorrowing/LSCBorrowerRegistration04_13.pdf and print a copy and send it to the school, or email or write a note saying you would like a copy sent home. If you send them back to school I will fax them in so students will have a card ready and waiting when we get there. If your child already has a library card, please send it with him or her to school on that day.

MIMI #5
This week we have been talking lots about the ocean, sea life and marine animals as an introduction to our last MIMI poster. Yesterday I brought a couple of artifacts for the students to look at and touch. I brought un oursin (a sea urchin), and un os de baleine (a whale bone).
Here they are:
Here they are:
L'oursin is about 6cm in diameter. |
Now that we have read some books about the sea and ocean, today we will look at our poster and label it, giving us a new set of words to study.
Life cycles
We have been looking at various animals and how their life cycles are the same and different. We learned about animals that change dramatically through their life (caterpillar to butterfly), and we learned about animals that are ovipare (oviparous - hatched from eggs), and animals that are vivipare (vivparous - live birth). Yesterday we each got an animal and went on the computers to research its life cycle. We had to find the answers to two questions: Is it ovipare or vivipare? and Does it undergo la metamorphose or non?
When we came back to class we sorted our animals into the 4 groups. Here is our work:

StarLab
Yesterday morning we got to visit StarLab, which was very cool. We learned about some of the stars in the sky, as well as some of the stories that go with some of the constellations. What a great opportunity!

Dancing Birds
When we had the chicks hatch, we learned a little bit about the parts of birds. We also learned how male and female birds are different. We discussed how the females' job is to keep the eggs in the nest safe, and how that affects how birds are different colours. We learned that male birds need bright colours and interesting tricks to attract female birds, but that female birds need to be camouflage to stay hidden in the nest. This morning we watched a little clip of some interesting dances that some birds do to attract a partner.

Joyeuse Fete des Meres!
Happy Mothers' Day to all! I hope everyone enjoyed the gift from their student. We dicussed a lot last week about how great our mothers are. We compiled a large list of adjectives to describe our mothers to create our gifts. Some students requested that I put the website that we used to create them on the blog so they could play with it at home, so here it is: www.wordle.net

Les oeufs
Yesterday we were learning about eggs. We discussed that not all eggs become chicks, only ones that are layed when there is a rooster and a hen. We looked at an egg that we eat, and learned the vocabulary for some of the parts.
Les poussins - Jour 3
We checked on the chicks again this morning, and were met with a surprise! All 12 chicks had hatched! They are still in the incubator getting dry and fluffy. Tomorrow we will get to hold them. Here are a few pictures:
Les poussins - Jour 2
Today we went and visited the eggs again, only today we could hear peeping and could see the little cracks on the eggs where the chicks are starting to hatch from. After school this evening, I was in Mme Hada's classroom and got to see one hatch! Hopefully one will hatch during the day tomorrow and we will all get to see. Here is a photo and a short video of what happened.

The chick uses his beak to peck all around the egg and then pushes out. He is really, really tired after and just lays in the incubator while he dries off and gets his energy back. |
