Borax crystals

Late last week when we were learning about dissolving solides in liquids, students made a shape using a pipecleaner that we put into hot water with Borax dissolved in it. As we saw in the beaker, the water cooled and the Borax turned into crystals on their pipe cleaners. I will be sending them home with students tomorrow, but I wanted to inform you that THEY ARE NOT EDIBLE. They look very much like the homemade rock candy that can be made using the same process, but are made of Borax and should not be consumed. Thank you.

Les solides, les liquides et les gaz

Today we were working with more liquides and solides to find out what happens when we mix them together.

We mixed bicarbonate de soude and du vinaigre...
We mixed NeutraSeltzer and de l'eau...
And we mixed a Borax/water liquid with a glue/water liquide to make Slime!

Today we learned that sometimes solides et liquides combine to make gaz, and sometimes deux liquides can make a very fun and interesting substance. The slime we made today is neither a liquid nor a solid because it doesn't follow all of the rules for either. When we play with it, it is solid, it stays together, but when we leave it alone, it flows, like a liquid. We call this a non-Newtonian fluid.
More slime!

Parents: All students made this promise today before taking home their slime: "I promise to only play with my slime at the kitchen table, and never ever on my bed, or on the carpets at home."

Les matieres dangereuses

We have been learning in science about liquids and solids, and how sometimes they can be dangerous. We learned to identify some of the hazard symbols, including those for flammable, toxic, corrosive, irritating and explosive materials. We discussed storing hazardous materials in safe places, out of reach of little brothers and sisters and pets.

Les solides et les liquides

We have been continuing to learn about liquids and solids for science. This week, we were mixing solids and liquids together. We learned that some solids dissolve, but others don't. We mixed salt with water, and glitter with water. The word in French we learned was dissoudre, to dissolve. We dissolved Borax in room temperature water and in boiling water. Interestingly, the hot water dissolved all the Borax, but not all of the Borax was dissolved by the room temperature water. We let the hot water cool down and checked on it again the next morning. Here are some pictures of what we saw the morning after:
After the hot water cooled down, the Borax isn't dissolved in the water, but it doesn't look like white powder  any more.

Borax that didn't dissolve in room temperature water.

Water Rafiki Friend Chains

There was a piece in the newsletter about Water Rafiki Friend Chains yesterday, and coming home today is an order form. We had a visit from an SLC member who explained about the chains this morning. Each chain purchased provides water for one person for an entire year! They are made by hand in Kenya by women who receive fair wages. Here is a little video about the water rafiki chains:
Orders are due in by Thursday, January 31st. Cheques can be made payable to the school.

Les liquides

Corn syrup, water and oil don't mix.

Lava lamps!

Lava lamp
Today we were looking at liquids. We described 3 different liquids and then watched what happened when we mixed them together. We learned that some liquids are heavier than others. We learned a new word to describe liquids - visqueux (viscous). At the end of our experiment we added some food colouring to the mix to see what would happen. The effect was something like a lava lamp. We learned that some liquids don't always mix together, but some do.

Les liquides et les solides homework

Written in the agenda as homework for today was Les liquides et les solides. I didn't get a chance to go over the expectations for this with students at the end of the day, so it will be coming home tomorrow. I am asking that it be back by next Wednesday, January 23rd.
Students will have to find 2 liquids at home and describe them, decide which is the most viscous, as well as mix them together to see what happens.
Merci!

Science Fair

This year, EVS will be having a science fair. For my students, completing a project will be completely optional. We discussed today about what a science fair is and looked at some science websites during our computer time to get some ideas of what kind of science we may be interested in doing a project about.
The science fair will be on March 20th. Projects will be on display in the afternoon and again in the evening from 5:30-7pm. My students are free to do a project on their own, or with one or two partners. There are some websites to help with choosing topics and questions on the LibGuides page (http://elementarylibguides.spsd.sk.ca/content.php?pid=290416&sid=3304031). Stay tuned for more information on this blog and in the school newsletters.
This is a great opportunity for students to learn about an area of science that interests them.  If you have any questions or want help getting started, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thank you, as always, for your support at home.

Math Club

Starting tomorrow, Math Club will now be on Tuesdays from 12:10-12:45. Skipping club will be starting shortly on Thursdays at lunch and we didn't want students to have to choose between the two.

Kindness - La gentillesse

Our next trait for character education will be Kindness, or la gentillesse.

We looked at the website www.randomactsofkindness.org where there are many ideas for random acts of kindness and then we each wrote a page of a class book of ideas for Random Acts of Kindness (les Bonnes Actions) that we can do to brighten someone's day. Click on the link to see our ideas: http://video.spsd.sk.ca/uploads/OllerheadK20131611917.wmv
